Easton Fire Department Extinguishes Barn Fire Early Sunday Morning

EASTON — Chief Kevin Partridge reports that the Easton Fire Department extinguished a fire at a barn on Elm Street early Sunday morning.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, firefighters responded to a 911 call from a resident at 100 Elm St. that his barn was on fire. Upon arrival crews saw heavy flames coming from the barn, which was beginning to spread to the house approximately 20 feet away.

Firefighters worked aggressively to knock down the fire at the barn as well as to limit the spread of the fire to the house. The bulk of the fire was knocked down by approximately 9:25 p.m., and the fire was fully extinguished by approximately 1 a.m. Sunday morning. 

There were two fire hydrants on the property, but neither provided enough pressure to provide an adequate water supply. Firefighters needed to lay hose line from a hydrant approximately 1,700 feet into the property. 

The barn, which was made primarily of wood, contained large quantities of firewood and hay, which all contributed to the speed at which the fire spread. 

One Easton firefighter was treated on-scene for non-life-threatening injuries before being transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, and has since been released.

The barn is considered a total loss. The home sustained minor damage to its siding. A chicken coop on the property was also damaged, but none of the chickens were injured. 

The last unit was cleared from the scene at approximately 1:40 a.m.

“I would like to commend our firefighters for preventing the fire from spreading further and becoming a much worse situation,” Chief Partridge said. “The quick decision by Captain Evan Malone and his crews on scene is what saved the house on the property.” 

Crews from the West Bridgewater and Sharon Fire Departments provided mutual aid at the scene, and the Norton Fire Department provided station coverage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Easton Fire Department and the State Fire Marshall’s Office, but is not believed to be suspicious.
