WAKEFIELD — The Massachusetts Partnerships for Youth (MPY) will be sponsoring the “Promoting Resilience and Healthy Outcomes of LGBTQ Students” Conference next month in Burlington.
“We look forward to hosting this conference to help educators support LGBTQ students,” said MPY Executive Director Margie Daniels. “By understanding the intricacies of gender identity, we hope to help create environments that allow students to be comfortable and thrive.”
WHEN:
Monday, March 9 from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
WHERE:
Marshall Simonds Middle School, 114 Winn St., Burlington.
WHO:
- Margie Daniels, Executive Director of Massachusetts Partnerships for Youth
- Jeff Perrotti, Founding Director of Massachusetts Elementary & Secondary Education’s Safe Schools Program for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning Students
WHAT:
This conference will highlight policies and best practices for supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) students, with a focus on transgender and gender nonconforming students.
With an increase in the number of students beginning to socially transition their gender earlier, this session will provide a context for understanding gender identity and expression. Students from pre-K to 12th grade, parents, and educators who have successfully navigated this terrain will share their experiences at the conference as well.
Participants will learn strategies to increase awareness, prevent bullying and harassment, foster resilience, and promote a healthy and safe learning environment.
Senator Jason Lewis will receive the MPY Legislator of the Year Award at the conference.
More than 100 participants are expected to attend the event, including school psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, school resource officers and administrators.
The cost is free for members and $100 for nonmembers.
