WHITMAN — Police Chief Timothy Hanlon and Fire Chief Timothy Grenno would like to announce traffic details for the community gathering planned for the Smith family following the tragedy in Florida earlier this week.

The gathering will take place Friday, Feb. 21 at Whitman Middle School, 100 Corthell Ave., beginning at 7 p.m. The Whitman Youth Soccer Association has organized the event, which will be held at the middle school’s fenced-in soccer field.

Those wishing to attend are asked to enter the school via Temple Street (Route 27) and Corthell Avenue. Following the gathering, all vehicles will exit the school via Hogg Memorial Drive onto Auburn Street (Route 14).

Parking will be limited at the school, and it is recommended that drivers carpool. Officers will be on scene directing traffic and guiding drivers to parking spots.

Any marked parking spot in the school’s lot will be available, but drivers will not be permitted to park on any grassy areas or athletic fields at the school. On-street parking will also be prohibited on Corthell Avenue.

Those in attendance are asked to dress warmly, and be patient in the case of delays and heavy traffic. Whitman Police, Fire and EMS crews will be on scene.

“Members from Whitman and Hanson are encouraged to attend this community gathering to show their support for the Smith family and their loved ones,” Chief Hanlon said.

“We are asking those planning on attending this event to be patient and to respect the privacy of the Smith family,” Chief Grenno said.

Media Instructions:

Members of the media attending the gathering are asked to enter the school via the same Temple Street/Corthell Avenue entrance as the general public. Police will direct media to a reserved media-only parking area adjacent to the school.
