NEWINGTON — Chief E.J. Hoyt and the Newington Fire Department are pleased to share that firefighters were able to collect 400 pounds of food donations during Friday’s Santa Ride through town and End 68 Hours of Hunger Food Drive.

The Newington Fire Department partnered with Santa Claus to visit residents on a tour through town on a sleigh themed parade float on Friday, an annual tradition. As the parade visited every road in town, members of the Newington Fire Department also collected donations of various canned, boxed and bagged food items from residents to donate to the 68 Hours of Hunger program through a partnership with the Newington Elementary School.

A public nonprofit, End 68 Hours of Hunger works to ensure children are provided with food on the weekends when children in need do not have access to free breakfast and lunch meals served in school cafeterias.

“The End 68 Hours of Hunger food drive received so much support from our residents on Friday, and we’re incredibly thankful to everyone who participated,” Chief Hoyt said. “The annual Santa Ride and food drive is a special tradition for our department, and it was great to be able to spread holiday cheer while also gathering donations for those in need in our community.”

The Santa Parade was sponsored by the Newington Fire Department and Newington Professional Firefighters Local 4104.
