Weymouth Public Schools Staff to Continue Active Shooter Response Training

WEYMOUTH — Superintendent Jennifer Curtis-Whipple announces that the Weymouth Public Schools, along with its community partners the Weymouth Police Department and Weymouth Fire Department, will conduct ALICE training with Weymouth Public School staff in January.

Initial teacher training will be done during a professional development day on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and a parent training session will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9 and is open to the public.

Additional training will be offered in February for secondary school staff and in April for primary school staff and will continue throughout the year. In addition, student practice drills will begin in the spring.

ALICE, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate, is a training method that helps prepare individuals to handle the threat of an active shooter. It teaches individuals personal survival skills as well as how to lead others to safety during an act of violence. These skills seek to empower teachers, staff and students to make decisions that can save lives. The model is endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education.

Training for staff in January will be run collaboratively by members of the Weymouth Fire Department, Weymouth Police Department and school personnel who underwent training seminars together in October.
