Manchester-by-the-Sea Announces Changes to Curbside Bulk Item Pickup

MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA — Public Works Director Chuck Dam announces that several changes to the town’s bulk item pickup will go into effect next month.

Beginning Jan 1., Waste Management will be facilitating all curbside bulk item pickups. There will be no more bulk item green sticker sales at Town Hall.

This change enables residents to pre-pay and schedule curbside disposal by calling Waste Management at 800-972-4545, Monday-Friday, no later than 3 p.m. on the business day prior to their regularly scheduled trash pickup day. Residents will also be able to put out more than one bulk item per week.

All current green stickers must be used by Dec. 31 as they will be invalid at the start of the new year. There are no returns or refunds available.

Examples of bulk items include box springs/mattresses, carpet/carpet padding, rigid plastics, chairs, couches and other wooden furniture. The new fee for disposal will be $27 per item.

The change will also allow Waste Management to know exactly what needs to be picked up each week and where, saving residents the hassle of a missed pickup.

Residents who have bulk items that are gently used are encouraged to contact Beverly Bootstraps at 978-921-4710 or Second Glance in Gloucester at 978-283-4798 for potential reuse.

Manchester-by-the-Sea’s transfer station policies and hours will remain the same, and residents still need to visit Town Hall to purchase a sticker for disposal of electronic and metal items.

Those with questions should contact the DPW at 978-526-1242. A 2019 Waste Management calendar/information pamphlet will be mailed out to all Manchester residences by early January.
