King Philip High Students’ Eagle Scout Projects Improve Athletics Complex

WRENTHAM — For King Philip Regional High School juniors Jack Collentro and Jack Norberg, the students used their recent Eagle Scout projects to not only improve the school’s athletics complex, but to highlight their hard work and school spirit.

Collentro chose to completely renovate and refurbish the concession stand at the KPHS football field. Norberg worked to relocate the flagpole memorial and beautify  scoreboard area of the field.

“Both of these students worked very hard on these projects and the end results were amazing,” Athletic Director Gary Brown said. “We want to give thanks to all of the contractors and people who helped them with their projects, especially our Grounds Manager Joe Zahner, Paul Molla and the KP Sports Boosters.”

On Thursday, Oct. 17, a dedication ceremony was held to commemorate both projects and the concession stand held its grand opening.

Collentro’s project included demolishing most of the concession stand and rebuilding it from the ground up. A new roof, plumbing, electrical wiring, concrete floor, interior cabinets, cooking equipment and other work was done in order to complete the extensive project.

Norberg’s project was to relocate the flag pole from its standalone position, closer to the scoreboard, and beautify the area with a garden.

His project consisted of making a concrete foundation for the pole in its new location, wiring lights and building the garden area.

Much of the labor and supplies were donated by local businesses and the teens raised the rest of the money for the projects through fundraising efforts. The projects began over the summer were completed in September.

“The fact that they both chose to improve our athletics complex with their Eagle Scout projects is really great and the finished products both came out beautifully,” Superintendent Paul Zinni said. “The entire KP community should be proud.”

The concession stand can now be used as a way for other athletics teams and student organizations to raise money for their groups by working the stand themselves during football games and other events.

“Both of them stayed on track throughout the whole process and built something that everyone can be proud of,” Athletic Director Brown said. “It was a true community effort and it made me very proud and humble to see so many people wanting to be involved and give back to their community.”

For Collentro and Norberg, who both play on the KP football team, completing the projects enabled them to take another step toward earning their Eagle Scout badges.
