Hanson Fire and Police Departments Respond to 3-Alarm Fire at Vacant Building

HANSON — Fire Chief Jerome Thompson and Police Chief Michael Miksch report that the fire and police departments are currently responding to a 3-alarm fire at a vacant building Thursday afternoon in Hanson.

At approximately 3 p.m., rescuers received a report of a fire at 16 Liberty St., on Route 58 near the center of town. The vacant building was formerly JJ’s Pub.

Upon arrival, fire was showing from the building and firefighters immediately began to start extinguishing the flames. A second and third alarm was subsequently called for and fire departments from numerous surrounding communities came to assist.

As of 6 p.m., the fire had been extinguished and firefighters were dousing remaining hot spots. No injuries have been reported.

Route 58, at the intersection of Liberty Street and East Washington Street are both closed while the scene remains active.

National Grid shut off electricity in the area to allow firefighters to safely work. About 200 customers may be impacted and power will be restored as soon as it is safe to do so. Fire Chief Thompson and Police Chief Miksch would like to thank residents for their patience.

The cause and origin of the fire is unknown at this time and will be investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s office and Hanson Police.

As the scene is still active at this time, people are asked to please avoid the area.
