Newport Police Department Investigating Unattended Death

NEWPORT, Vt. — Chief Seth C. DiSanto reports that the Newport Police Department is investigating the death of a New Hampshire man found near an ice fishing shanty on Sunday.

Newport Police received a missing persons report for John Barry, age 82, of Gorham, New Hampshire, who was last seen driving a GMC Canyon pickup truck. Information from the report suggested that the man may be ice fishing on Lake Memphremagog.

A trace of the missing man’s phone showed him to be about a mile north of the Claremont Terrace cell tower. A Newport police officer located the vehicle and noticed a nearby ice shanty. Barry was found just outside the shanty. He was taken to North County Hospital by Newport Ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

The facts and circumstances of Barry’s death are under investigation. At this time, foul play is not suspected.
