Whittier Tech Holds Ugly Sweater Contest to Benefit Families in Need

HAVERHILL –  To help families in need this season, Whittier Tech students competed in an ugly sweater contest today to raise money for the school’s annual holiday fund.

Whittier’s student government launched the first Ugly Holiday Sweater Day on Dec. 20, challenging freshmen through seniors to come up with the best design.

All participants were asked to make a small donation to the school’s holiday fund, which will be used to purchase gifts for 72 Whittier families this season.

A couple hundred students entered the contest, which members of the student government judged, deeming sophomore Ronna Burroughs, a Haverhill resident studying marketing, as the winner. Her sparkly white sweater featured a Christmas tree made out of tinsel, garlands, colorful streamers and ornaments. To add extra pizzazz to the ensemble, she outstretched her arms to reveal two stockings hanging off it.

“The Ugly Holiday Sweater Day was a fun, festive way to celebrate the holidays,” Superintendent Maureen Lynch said. “Plus, the donations we received from the contest directly benefit students and families at Whittier.”

Burroughs will receive a Whittier Tech sweatshirt from the school store for taking home first place.
