Great Pumpkin Race Returns to Rogers Middle School

ROCKLAND — Rogers Middle School resurrected a long-standing fall tradition this week when students participated in The Great Pumpkin Race for the first time in several years.
The .6-mile race in and around the school stadium had been a staple at RMS until 2011, when it was suspended during construction of the new school building. However, after a seven year hiatus, the school-wide event returned amid high enthusiasm from students, parents, teachers and administrators. Members of the RMS band provided the entertainment for the afternoon.
Twenty students from each class participated in the race while being cheered on by the rest of the RMS community, with the following students emerging as winners:
- Fifth Grade: Mia Radzik (3:47) and Michael MacDougall (3:36)
- Sixth Grade: Meghan Kearns (3:32) and Benjamin Carpine (3:41)
- Seventh Grade: Julia Bahnuk (3:10) and Jacob Lucas (3:21)
- Eighth Grade: Julia Elie (3:00) and Derrik Sage (2:51)
“This was a great whole-school activity that demonstrated competitiveness, sportsmanship and camaraderie,” RMS Physical Education Teacher Diana Mitchell said. “I can’t wait to see the school spirit for the Great Pumpkin Race grow in the years to come.”
Mitchell and fellow Physical Education Teacher Steve Capone worked together to coordinate the return of the event, which will once again assume its rightful place as a RMS tradition.
