Rockland High School to Host First Credit for Life Fair

Event Will Help Students Understand Financial Responsibility

ROCKLAND — Principal John Harrison announces that Rockland High School will host its first Credit for Life Fair next week, which will help students develop an understanding of the importance of personal finances and budgeting. 

WHO: 

• Rockland High School students
• Volunteers from numerous area businesses and educational institutions

WHEN: 

Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 8:45 a.m.

WHERE:

Rockland High School gym, 52 MacKinlay Way

WHAT:

Next Tuesday, sophomores will have a chance play the part of 25-year-olds responsible for balancing their personal budgets. Students will be assigned a career based on their individual interests, along with a corresponding salary, and then will be tasked with managing a month’s worth of theoretical bills. 

A variety of organizations have volunteered to run booths at the event, which will help students build a hands-on understanding of the real-world responsibilities that come with paying for housing, transportation, education, luxuries and other expenses.

The experience will demonstrate the correlation between education and career choice, and help students better realize how those decisions ultimately dictate their financial status as adults.

“Our responsibility as educators is to make sure our students are prepared for the world that awaits them once they leave Rockland High School,” Principal Harrison said. “This event offers students an interactive experience that will give them the lifelong skills they’ll need to handle money and finances as adults.”
