Swasey Central School Hosts Monthly Assemblies to Build School-Wide Culture

Called the “Swasey Shindigs,” each month the school comes together to listen to a different grade level or group, which shares news, performs songs and plays, and presents on relevant topics. Principal Kew also does a birthday dance with all the students and staff who celebrated birthdays that month.

On Friday, Sept. 29, during the first Swasey Shindig of the 2017-18 school year, teachers performed a kazoo band version of “Sweet Caroline” conducted by music teacher Ethan Brown. Teachers also put on a skit the week prior during Brentwood’s 275th birthday celebration, where the entire community came out for a parade, music, food and more.

During the teachers’ performance, students couldn’t help but sing along to the classic tune and erupted in applause and cheers when the song concluded.

“This was by far one of our most fun shindigs and was a great way to welcome students back to school,” Principal Kew said. “I want to commend teachers for a fantastic performance. We look forward to everything that students plan to share with us as we move throughout the year.”

Principal Kew first began Swasey Shindigs in 2012 after starting at the Swasey School to bring the entire school together once a month as a unified group. Each year, traditions established in prior assemblies are built upon and the 20-30 minute meeting has become something students, faculty and staff look forward to each month.
