Burlington Police to Host Citizens Police Academy

BURLINGTON — Chief Michael Kent is pleased to announce that the Burlington Police Department will host its Citizens Police Academy this fall, offering residents an in-depth look at what it’s like to be a police officer.

WHEN

Wednesday nights from 6-9 p.m., starting Oct. 8 and continuing through Dec. 6.

WHERE

Burlington Police Department, 45 Center St.

WHAT

The academy is a 10 session in-person classroom training that is free for Burlington residents and anyone who works in town. Participants must be18 or older. Those 16 and older can attend if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Students at the academy will learn about numerous elements of police work, including:

  • Massachusetts Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure
  • Firearms and Defensive Tactics
  • Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
  • Crime Prevention
  • Terrorism and Emergency Preparedness
  • Domestic Violence
  • Police Patrol Procedures
  • Police Technology
  • K-9 Demonstration

Academy participants will also have the option to accompany an officer on a ride-along, or observe the department’s dispatchers as they work.

Those interested in participating will be required to consent to a criminal background check and sign a non-disclosure agreement.

“The Citizens Police Academy is a fantastic way for the members of our community to develop a deeper understanding of the work that our officers do each day,” Chief Kent said. “The whole department is looking forward to welcoming students and sharing our work with them.”
