Bedford Police Searching for Suspects Who Abandoned Dog

BEDFORD — Chief John J. Bryfonski reports that the Bedford Police Department is actively searching for two suspects they believe abandoned a dog at a local animal shelter earlier this week.

On Monday, Aug. 28, at approximately 8:32 a.m., Bedford Police responded to the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire (ARL), 545 Rt. 101, for a report of possible animal cruelty.

Upon arrival, officers learned that an ARL employee had arrived for work on Monday morning and discovered an adult female golden retriever lying in the mulch near the building’s back door. Officers observed that the dog was in extremely poor condition, and refused to eat or drink anything.

After an investigation, police determined that a man and a woman had abandoned the dog at the back door of the ARL around 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, leaving the animal alone outside in the elements for more than 12 hours with no food or water. The shelter closes at 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Following a medical examination by a veterinarian, the dog had to be euthanized due to its extensive medical issues, many of which could be attributed to neglect over a long period of time. Employees of the ARL determined that the dog was approximately 10 to 12 years old.

Police are searching for a white male and a white female who were driving a blue, four-door sedan.

“This is an extremely disturbing case where an innocent animal was abandoned and left to die,” Chief Bryfonski said. “We are encouraging anyone with information about this incident or who may have seen something to give us a call right away.”
