Melrose High School Students Complete National German Exam

MELROSE — Melrose High School Principal Jason Merrill is pleased to announce that 47 students competed in the 2017 National German Exam and five received recognition for their achievements.

The National German Exam is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German and is administered annually to nearly 26,500 high school students in all 50 states and 20 countries. MHS students took the test in February, participating in levels 2, 3 and 4.

Level 2: Targets student proficiency in the novice/mid proficiency range. Students understand the main idea and some details on familiar topics expressed in sentences, short conversations, presentations and messages.

Level 3: Targets student proficiency in the novice high to intermediate low proficiency range. Students comprehend information related to basic personal and social needs and relevant to their immediate environment such as everyday life, school and community.

Level 4: Targets student proficiency in the intermediate low to mid proficiency range.Students understand the main points and most details in conversations, presentations and messages on familiar topics. They also understand the main idea and some details on unfamiliar topics. They demonstrate emerging evidence of the ability to make inferences and comprehend texts focused on relevant real-world topics of general interest.

Each level of the exam is comprised of 100 questions, which include multiple choice, matching and true/false. The test is broken down into two parts: listening and reading. All materials used in the exam are from authentic resources.

Participation is voluntary, and once the exam is completed, students are presented with gold, silver, bronze and achievement awards based on their scores.

Five MHS students received the following recognition:

Silberurkunde (Silver): freshman David Sharick
Bronzeurkunde (Bronze): freshman Sofia Gukelberger
Achievement (Honorable Mention): freshman Liam Talbot, sophmore Robert Brenner-Slagle and junior Lauren Reilly

“I want to commend all students who took the time to participate in this exam to test their language skills,” Principal Merrill said. “Congratulations to David, Sofia, Liam, Robert and Lauren for earning their awards.”
