One Killed, Two Injured After Speed Boats Collide in Taunton

TAUNTON – Chief Timothy Bradshaw reports the Taunton Fire Department responded to a fatal boat crash at the Bill Giles Memorial Regatta on Watson’s Pond (1644 Bay St.) this afternoon.

The collision involved three boats in a speed race and resulted in one fatality and two injuries – one minor, one critical.

At approximately 1 p.m., the Taunton Fire Dive Team was on scene of the race when the first boat spun out at 65 mph, causing a pileup. The second boat collided with the first, and the third boat crashed into the second. The collision caused all three drivers to be ejected from their boats.

Within minutes, Taunton Fire Dive Team and rescue swimmers had all three victims out of the water. Taunton Police, Massachusetts Environmental Police and Massachusetts State Police also responded.

The driver of the second boat was declared dead at the hospital. The third boat driver is in critical condition, and the first boat driver sustained minor injuries. Both were transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital.

All further media inquiries should be directed to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
