Action Ambulance Urges Support for Andover Teen Paralyzed after Swimming Accident

Online Fundraising Account Proceeds Benefit Jack Gerard and His Family

ANDOVER — Action Ambulance Inc. is seeking to call attention to a GoFundMe.com account that has been set up to benefit Andover teenager Jack Gerard, who was paralyzed during a tragic swimming accident on Cape Cod this summer.

The campaign seeks to raise $250,000 for the Jack’s ongoing care and medical expenses. As of Thursday, nearly $50,000 had already been pledged.

On July 4, Jack was vacationing with his family on Cape Cod and went swimming shortly after watching the Chatham Independence Day Parade, which is a family tradition. He suffered a C6 spinal cord injury and a broken neck after an accident occurred while he was swimming in the ocean.

Jack was taken by medical helicopter to Boston and underwent two complicated surgeries to stabilize his spine. His injuries are extensive, leaving him paralyzed and requiring expensive and regular medical treatment.

In addition to supporting the fundraising effort, Action Ambulance is providing all of the transportation needs for Jack and his family during his treatment and recovery free of charge.

“Jack is an inspiring young man. He has an incredibly positive attitude. He is an athlete, an honor student, and an all-around good kid,” said Action CEO Michael Woronka. “We stand with Jack and his incredible family, and we pledge to always be there to support him in his recovery.”

One hundred percent of the funds raised will go to Jack’s family to help offset the costs of healthcare staff, assistive and adaptive equipment, physical therapy, and the modifications needed to make his home accessible for Jack.

The hashtag #jacksback has also been created to help people share their own messages of hope and support for Jack.
