MHS Club Raises Money for American Cancer Society, Students to Participate in Relay for Life

MELROSE — High School Principal Marianne Farrell is pleased to announce that the Stand Up to Cancer Club has raised more than $7,000 to donate to the American Cancer Society and will be participating in the Relay For Life tomorrow.

More than 40 students will gather for the Relay For Life in Wakefield on Friday, June 17 to culminate their fundraising achievements. The club surpassed its goal of $100 per person — all of which will be used to support cancer survivors and provide services to survivors and their caretakers.

Relay For Life is team-based event consisting of an overnight walk and other activities that are designed to bring communities all over the country together to help raise awareness and money for cancer. The event also serves as an outlet for survivors to celebrate as their friends and family support them.

“It’s great to see students come together to raise money for a noble cause,” Principal Farrell said. “The Stand Up to Cancer Club continues to surpass their fundraising goals each year to help those in need and I am extremely proud of their achievements.”

The Stand Up to Cancer Club works year-round to raise money for the American Cancer Society. It has been in existence for the past three years and was started by Junior Yvane Ngassa, who wanted to create a charitable organization at MHS. Ngassa has served as President since its initiation and English teacher Megan Kisling and Spanish teacher Steven Malley are co-advisers of the club.

“We are very proud of the work we have done this year, and the students are looking forward to meeting survivors and participating in the festivities at the Relay For Life,” said Kisling. “When our students come together and see the difference that they can make in people’s lives, it really reinforces all our hard work.”
