Stoneham Police Arrest Man Allegedly Involved in Attempted Armed Robbery

STONEHAM — Police Chief James McIntyre reports that a man is facing charges in conjunction with an attempted armed robbery.

KEVIN CHAPPIE, AGE 35, OF CHELMSFORD  is charged with Attempted Armed Robbery and Threatening to Commit a crime.

Police responded to the Walgreens on Main Street on Friday, May 29, at approximately 6:50 p.m., after receiving a silent 911 call from the pharmacy. An officer arrived on scene within moments and found an employee outside the store waving his arms frantically stating that someone attempted to rob the pharmacy. The employee was able to provide a description of the suspect.

Police officers searched the area and an officer quickly located CHAPPIE on Main Street, placing him under arrest. He was transported to the Stoneham Police Department and held on $10,000 bail. CHAPPIE is scheduled to be arraigned today at Woburn District Court.

Upon interviewing the pharmacy employees, officers learned that CHAPPIE entered the store and asked for a prescription belonging to his girlfriend.  When no such prescription could be located, CHAPPIE walked away. He then returned to the counter, now with his hand concealed in a towel insinuating he had a weapon and demanded pharmacy personnel give him narcotics. Pharmacy personnel picked up the phone to call 911, which caused CHAPPIE to flee from the store.

“I commend the swift and thorough response of the Stoneham Police officers and dispatch personnel during this crime in progress,” Chief McIntyre said. “Thanks to their hard work, a dangerous suspect was taken off the streets.”

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
