Gloucester Police Save Distraught Woman at A. Piatt Andrew Bridge

GLOUCESTER — Police Chief Leonard Campanello and Shift Commander Lieutenant William Leanos report that quick-thinking members of the Gloucester Police Department this afternoon successfully aided a distraught woman on the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge.

Gloucester Police received a 911 call at 5:30 p.m. Thursday that a woman was on the other side of the fence at the top of the bridge, by which Rt. 128 spans the Annisquam River. The caller felt that the woman was about to jump.

Officers arrived and found the young woman. Officers Joseph Balbo, Clifford Alves, Chris Genovese and Troy Simoes approached her and successfully aided her in returning to the safety of the other side of the fence. The woman was taken to an area hospital.

Officers found a note in her vehicle, which described her intentions.

“Our officers saved a life today,” Chief Campanello said. “This young woman’s life near ended, and I hope that she gets the help that she needs.”

“These Police Officers acted without regard to their own life. They just saw a person in trouble and went to work,” Lieutenant Leanos said. “They are to be commended for their actions.”

Traffic was stopped briefly during the rescue.
