ENFIELD – Enfield Village School has been recognized as one of the best elementary schools in the state – again.
The annual US News & World Report rankings place Enfield Village as 18th among 251 public elementary schools, up from 23rd last year. Enfield has shown steady growth since it placed 61st in 2021.
Rankings are based on students’ performance in math and reading/English Language Arts, with consideration for socioeconomics.
About 83% of Enfield Village students scored at or above the proficient level for math, compared to 46% statewide, while 68% scored proficient or above in reading, compared to 54% statewide.
US News considers top-ranked students as successful in educating all students.
“As a staff, we believe that all children can learn and grow both academically and socially,” Principal Jamie Winny said. “We work to engage students in taking responsibility for their education and provide support to help them reach their goals.”
Two initiatives are driving this success:
- Enfield Village School is in its fourth year of the Illustrative Mathematics program in Grades K-4. Illustrative Mathematics is an open-source curriculum that promotes and rewards the collaboration of students through problem-based learning.
- Each school day includes a literacy intervention block. Staff identify students’ skill needs and support their educational advancement through targeted interventions.
To continue its work on improving student literacy, the district has adopted a new program, Arts & Letters, for this school year to support students in strengthening their skills. Lessons cover literary, nonfiction, fine art, and multimedia texts in science and social studies. Students are asked to summarize, organize, discuss, synthesize, and distill ideas from their readings, deepening their comprehension over time.
“This recognition only comes when the staff is highly motivated, meet the students where they are, and create the best path forward for their education,” Superintendent Amanda Isabelle said. “This moment belongs to our students, staff, and community who believes that anything is possible.
Enfield Village School serves about 200 students in Grades PreK-4. It was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in 2022.
