BLACKSTONE — Chief Kevin Roy reports that the Blackstone Fire Department responded to a hazardous materials incident on Monday evening.
On Monday, Oct. 26, at approximately 6 p.m., the Blackstone Fire Department responded to a home on Windsong Drive for reports of a possible mercury spill.
The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Division team responded to the scene to assist. The Town of Blackstone Board of Health was also called to assist.
The HazMat team worked to mitigate and clean up the spill. There were no reported injuries.
The spill appears to be from a broken thermostat.
“I commend the homeowners for calling and reporting this spill, as mercury is a dangerous material and should only be handled properly by professionals,” said Chief Roy. “I would also like to thank the State Hazmat team for their assistance on scene.”
The cause of the incident remains under investigation by the Blackstone Fire Department and the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
