BEVERLY — The Beverly Police Department arrested two New York men in connection with cooking oil thefts at two businesses on Cabot Street.
JESUS DEL ORBE ESCOLASTICO, 28, and OSMIN VELASQUEZ RAMOS, 21, both of YONKERS, NY, were arrested and charged with:
- Breaking Into a Depository (Two Counts)
- Possession of a Burglarious Instrument
- Vandalizing Property (Two Counts)
On Friday, Oct. 23, at approximately 5:05 a.m., officers responded to a restaurant at 20 Cabot St. following a report of suspicious activity involving two individuals and a van. The business recently had a cooking oil theft.
Officers arrived to find two individuals in a large white van parked in front of the business. Officers also observed fresh oil and grease on the ground, coming from a neighboring restaurant at 24 Cabot St.
Following an on-scene investigation, officers arrested the individuals, identified as DEL ORBE ESCOLASTICO and VELASQUEZ RAMOS.
The preliminary investigation indicates DEL ORBE ESCOLASTICO and VELASQUEZ RAMOS removed used cooking oil from grease traps at both businesses. While conducting a search of the men, officers located various tools, including wire cutters covered in grease.
Used cooking oil has resale value and is collected by companies for recycling into products such as biofuel. Police estimate the recovered cooking oil was worth approximately $2,750.
DEL ORBE ESCOLASTICO and VELASQUEZ RAMOS are expected to be arraigned in Beverly District Court on Friday.
These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
