Hopkinton to Begin First Phase of Historic Center School Restoration Project Nov. 2

HOPKINTON — The Town of Hopkinton announces that demolition of two Center School additions is expected to begin Monday, Nov. 2, starting the first phase of a project to restore the historic school.

The work will remove the building’s 1950 and 1980 additions to prepare the property for the next phase: restoration of the original 1928 school building.

Following a competitive bidding process, the Town awarded the demolition contract to American Environmental of Holyoke. The approximately $1.4 million contract is about 30% below the budgeted amount. The Town’s Community Preservation Committee administers funding through the Community Preservation Act.

American Environmental will secure the site and remove hazardous materials before demolishing the two additions. The work is expected to take approximately three months.

Once demolition is complete, crews will level and stabilize the site in preparation for the next phase.

Access to the property, including access to the walking trail, will be closed during the project.

Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Signs along Ash Street will alert residents to the work. All construction vehicles will be staged on the Center School property, and no traffic interruptions are anticipated.
