NORTON — Chief Shawn Simmons reports that the Norton Fire Department quickly extinguished a basement fire at an Olympia Street pizza parlor on Saturday evening.
The fire alarm system activated at a local pizza restaurant at 7:39 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10.
Fire crews arrived at 4 Olympia St., a recently opened pizza place, and found heavy smoke coming from the basement door in the rear of the business.
The first engine on the scene launched an aggressive interior attack, facing low visibility. Within 20 minutes, fire crews brought the flames under control and were working to ventilate the structure to release the smoke from the windowless basement.
No injuries were reported at the scene. The business was operational at the time of the fire.
Several neighboring departments sent mutual aid to the scene. Mansfield Fire Department provided station coverage. An Attleboro Fire Department ladder truck, a Taunton Fire Department engine, and a North Attleborough Fire Department ambulance responded to the scene.
The fire deployment coincided with two simultaneous medical calls, leaving only a single Norton engine available to respond.
“We’d like to thank our mutual partners who provided key support as we worked to quickly contain this fire,” said Chief Simmons. “In this case, the commercial fire alarm system worked as intended, alerting us to the fire early and giving us more time to fight it before the entire structure became fully involved.”
Building and utility inspectors have visited the scene. Fire crews remained at the scene, ventilating the structure and ensuring the building was safe.
The Norton Fire Department is investigating the fire.
