MEDFIELD — The Thomas Blake Middle School community commemorated the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11 with a day of reflective assemblies, discussions and classroom lessons.
The school day began with a morning announcement recognizing the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. Administrators asked students to consider the significance of the day and remember the innocent lives lost.
At 8:46 a.m., the exact time the first hijacked plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, a second announcement was made to observe a moment of silence for those who lost their lives in the attacks.
Throughout the day, students participated in age-appropriate classroom lessons and assemblies to reflect on the events and aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.
During advisory period, students viewed a series of videos detailing the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City, the Coast Guard’s role in responding to the attacks and how the attacks spurred the largest maritime evacuation in history.
After watching the videos, students then asked questions and discussed what they learned.

Thomas Blake Middle School also continued its 10-year tradition of supporting the local community on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. On Friday, Sept. 11, Blake held a one-day collection for the Medfield Food Cupboard to honor the spirit of community and compassion the country experienced following the events of 25 years ago.
Students were also asked to participate in an at-home assignment, which prompted them to interview an adult in their lives about their experiences and memories surrounding Sept. 11.
“On the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11, our students engaged in a day of assemblies and lessons to reflect on the lives lost and sacrifices made during the attacks,” said Principal Nat Vaughn. “Hearing firsthand from individuals like Brian Cole, who was in New York City that day, and speaking with adults in their lives about their memories helps our students understand the lasting impact of a tragedy that occurred before they were born.”
