Stoneham Fire Extinguishes Kitchen Fire in Apartment Building

STONEHAM — Chief Matthew Grafton reports that the Stoneham Fire Department responded to a working fire Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday, Aug. 6 at approximately 1:39 p.m., Stoneham Fire responded to reports of smoke coming from the third floor of a senior housing apartment building at 79 Duncklee Ave.

Upon arrival, crews located a fire in the kitchen of the third-floor apartment. Stoneham Fire utilized Ladder 1 and Engine 1 to launch an aggressive attack. Due to the fast action of crews, the fire was quickly contained.

One resident was home during the fire and exited the building safely prior to firefighters’ arrival. Crews from Engine 1 and Ladder 1 assisted residents on the third floor to safely exit the building.

Two firefighters were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no other injuries.

The resident was displaced and is being assisted by Stoneham Housing Authority. 

Mutual aid was provided by Winchester Fire and Armstrong Ambulance. Wakefield and Reading Fire provided station coverage. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Stoneham Fire Department.
