TAUNTON — Just a week after celebrating the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School’s new, state-of-the-art building, Superintendent-Director Dr. Alexandre Magalhaes will retire this week, concluding a public education career spanning more than 34 years.
Dr. Magalhaes spent much of his career at Bristol-Plymouth, serving as a mathematics teacher, Curriculum Instructional Specialist, Academic Coordinator, Program Administrator, and Superintendent-Director.
His classroom experience shaped the student-centered approach that guided his work throughout his career. In each role, Dr. Magalhaes focused on creating programs and opportunities that improved student outcomes and expanded access to academic and career pathways.
As Academic Coordinator, Dr. Magalhaes led efforts to revise the school’s academic schedule, expand academic programming, and introduce Advanced Placement (AP) courses to meet changing postsecondary requirements.
He also expanded dual enrollment opportunities and supported the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), which strengthened the district’s academic intervention and student support systems.
As Program Administrator and later Superintendent-Director, Dr. Magalhaes expanded educational opportunities, strengthened partnerships with employers, and advanced innovative programming aligned with regional workforce needs.
One of the most significant accomplishments of his tenure was overseeing the construction of Bristol-Plymouth’s new state-of-the-art campus, one of the biggest projects in district history. The project was completed on time and within budget and will serve future generations of students. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on July 22.
“It has been an honor to spend my career serving the students, staff, and communities of Bristol-Plymouth,” Dr. Magalhaes said. “I am proud of how this district has grown and of the opportunities we have created for students. The greatest reward has always been watching our students succeed and knowing that their education helped prepare them for the next stage of their lives.”
Dr. Magalhaes earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, a master’s degree in educational leadership from Bridgewater State University, and a doctorate in educational leadership from New England College.
In retirement, he plans to spend more time with family, travel, and explore new opportunities to serve others.
Dr. Magalhaes’ retirement will be effective July 31. Assistant Superintendent Andrew Rebello has been named the next Superintendent-Director for Bristol-Plymouth, effective Aug. 1.
