BURLINGTON — The Burlington Fire Department battled heat, humidity and challenging conditions as they extinguished a significant fire in a home on Mountain Road on Monday afternoon.
On Monday, July 13, at 3:52 p.m., the Burlington Fire Department was called to 6 Mountain Road for a report of a possible structure fire.
Companies arrived minutes later to discover a 2 1/2 story home with fire showing from the home and a car in the driveway. A power line was also down in the driveway.
Firefighters stretched three hose lines and immediately knocked down the fire on the exterior of the home and the car in the driveway. Firefighters then took two hose lines into the home, where they made an aggressive interior attack on the fire on the first and second floors.
All residents evacuated on their own.
High heat and humidity, along with the need for extensive overhaul inside the home to ensure the fire was out, created a challenging environment for firefighters.
Two firefighters were transported with possible heat exhaustion to a local hospital, where they were later released.
The home suffered significant fire and water damage throughout. Eight residents were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Firefighters from Woburn provided mutual aid at the scene. Armstrong Ambulance and rehab trucks from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and the Boston Sparks supported firefighters at the scene. Firefighters from Wilmington and Bedford covered Burlington stations.
The cause remains under investigation by the Burlington Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“It was a hot, humid day and a very involved fire that had a big head start on us. I commend our firefighters and mutual aid partners for the job they did under such tough conditions,” said Chief James Browne. “I also want to thank our mutual aid support, Armstrong Ambulance, and both DFS and Boston Sparks for sending much-needed rehab units.”
