HOLBROOK — The following is a statement from Chief David Del Papa:
“The Holbrook Police Department recently investigated a reported assault and battery on an unhoused member of our community who was experiencing significant mental health challenges.
“Following a thorough investigation, the Department sought felony criminal complaints against two Town employees who are alleged to have been involved in the incident.
“This incident has been of great concern to the Holbrook Police Department and Town officials because it involved an individual who was particularly vulnerable due to his mental health condition and the circumstances surrounding the reported battery. Every member of our community deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion, regardless of their housing status or mental health challenges.
“I want to commend the responding officers for their swift response, professionalism and compassion on the night of the incident. I also commend our detectives for conducting a diligent, thorough, and impartial investigation that resulted in the development of the evidence necessary to seek criminal charges.
“The Holbrook Police Department is committed to conducting fair, objective, and professional investigations and to ensuring that all members of our community are afforded equal protection under the law.
“As is the case with all criminal matters, the charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.”
As this matter is now before the courts and the suspects have been arraigned, additional inquiries about the case should be directed to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.
