NEWBURY — The Town of Newbury and the Newbury Public Health Department announce that Plum Island Beach will be closed to swimming effective immediately and until further notice.
The Newbury Health Department has issued a precautionary closure of Plum Island Beach to swimming due to the ongoing sewage discharge that has affected the Merrimack River.
This closure has been implemented to protect public health out of an abundance of caution while water quality conditions are evaluated and fixed. Swimming is prohibited until further notice.
The beach remains open for other activities unless otherwise posted; however, visitors should avoid contact with the water during this closure.
The Newbury Health Department is working with neighboring communities and state and regional partners during this closure and will continue to monitor conditions. The beach will be reopened for swimming once it is determined that water quality is safe.
The Town of Newbury and the Newbury Health Department thankst he community for their patience and understanding during this time.
