Stoneham Fire Contains Fire to Basement of Home 

STONEHAM — Chief Matthew Grafton reports that the Stoneham Fire Department successfully contained a small fire that appears to have started accidentally in the basement of a home. 

Stoneham Fire responded to report of a smoke in the basement of a two-family home at 68 Pleasant St. on Thursday, June 11, at about 6:15 a.m. 

All five occupants had evacuated prior to crews’ arrival, and no injuries were reported. 

Fire crews located the source of the smoke and launched an attack that quickly extinguished the flames and contained the fire to the basement. 

Crews remained on scene to ventilate the basement from smoke and investigate the cause of the fire. 

Residents of the home will not be displaced. 

Stoneham Fire Investigators are actively investigating this incident, but preliminary investigations indicate the fire appeared to have started accidentally. 

Winchester Fire provided on-scene mutual aid support, while Wakefield and Reading Fire provided station coverage. 

“Our crews did an excellent job locating the source of the fire and working quickly to put it out before it could spread into the main body of the home,” said Chief Grafton. “Thanks to their effort, there is not serious damage to the property, and residents are expected to be able to return to their homes. As always, we thank our mutual aid partners for their professionalism and collaboration, which strengthens our response and allows us to attack incidents so that damage is mitigated.”
