TOWNSEND — Nissitissit Middle School Principal Lauren Young is proud to share that two Nissitissit students have earned top honors in a statewide investment competition, delivering one of the strongest performances in recent history.
Grade 7 students, Marcus VanWormer and Jamison Santos, finished first and second, respectively, in the Massachusetts Stock Market Game, a yearlong financial literacy program run by the SIFMA Foundation. Over 4,000 students from across the Commonwealth participated in the competition.
Under the direction of social studies teacher Catherine Walmsley, students in the program applied classroom concepts in economics and mathematics to real-world investing strategies.
The program challenges students to manage a hypothetical $100,000 investment portfolio using real market data, trading equities listed on major exchanges, while tracking economic trends and financial news.
VanWormer tripled the value of his portfolio, finishing with more than $300,000, attributing his success to a disciplined, long-term approach. Santos earned his ranking through a strategy of diversification and selection in technology, apparel, and sports sectors.
In recognition of VanWormer’s and Santos’ accomplishments, a SIFMA Foundation representative visited the school and noted that VanWormer’s results rank among the most exceptional in the past decade.
“We are incredibly proud of Marcus and Jamison for this outstanding accomplishment,” said Principal Young. “Their success speaks not only to their hard work, but to the strength of the instruction and opportunities provided by our educators.”
