Hampton educator Susan Antico has devoted more than 40 years to ensuring that New Hampshire students are safe, healthy, and have the chance to reach their full potential.
On Wednesday, May 20, she was recognized as a recipient of the Champions for Children Award, given annually by the New Hampshire School Administrators Association, during a celebration in Concord.
“This is such an honor, because this award is what I try to do each day,” Antico said. “My work has been for the children.”
The New Hampshire School Administrators Association celebrated five regional Champions in Concord on Wednesday, May 20, announcing Daniel Morin, Michelle Morin, and Morin Contracting Services of Dunbarton as statewide Champion.
Panels representing each of the NHSAA’s five regions — Lakes, North Country, South Central, Southeast and Southwest — select local awardees. A separate panel selects the overall winner from the five honorees. Antico was selected as the Southeast recipient earlier this year.
Antico worked for 27 years as a school counselor at Marston Elementary School in Hampton. She continues to work part-time as a consultant with SAU 90, leading to numerous initiatives that support student success and staff development. She was the New Hampshire Elementary School Counselor of the Year for 2007-2008.
“Her career is a master class in compassionate learning and systemic advocacy for children,” wrote Superintendent Lois Costa. “Susan does not just fulfill a job description; she builds a safety net and supportive structures that allow children to thrive.”
Marston School Principal Nathan Saddler and Marston School Counselor Angela Bowen also supported Antico’s selection, citing her efforts to improve staff morale, keep educators up to date on best practices, and her ability to lead with kindness, purpose, and integrity.
Antico’s commitment to children has extended into the Hampton community, as she assists with many educational initiatives through the Hampton Area Rotary Club, and leads a leadership training program for 14 Winnacunnet High School sophomores.
“Susan has spent her life’s work bettering the lives of children and youth in our community,” wrote Nyhan, who has known Antico for 50 years. “She is an exemplary candidate for this public recognition award.”
