WOBURN — Shamrock Elementary School grade 1 students were joined by a very special visitor to celebrate their achievement in reading.
Students in Laura Rebelo and Kathleen Reissfelder’s grade 1 class participated in the Blades Reading Challenge, an annual initiative by the Boston Bruins in partnership with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The initiative promotes literacy among students by encouraging them to hit reading goals for a chance to win classroom prizes.
The Challenge, which runs through April, focuses on the number of pages students read, with different milestones offering different prizes, including signed player photos, swag bags, and a visit from Boston Bruins mascot Blades.
Mrs. Rebelo and Miss Reissfelder’s students accumulated over 88,000 pages read, earning them the highest level of prize the challenge offered; a swag bag for each student and a visit from Blades.
In anticipation of Blades’ visit, many students donned their Boston Bruins apparel. During the visit, students got to play and take pictures with Blades, while the mascot encouraged students to continue their love of reading.
Blades even took the time to make a visit to every single Shamrock Elementary classroom.
“I would like to congratulate Mrs. Rebelo and Miss Reissfelder’s students for their fantastic achievement in reading,” said Principal Wayne Clark. “I hope Blades’ visit to Shamrock Elementary was a strong reminder for all students that reading is important and can be a fun, engaging passtime when students are not in the classroom.”
