IPSWICH — The Ipswich Police Department and the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) SWAT Team executed a warrant that led to the arrest of an Ipswich man on Tuesday morning.
At about 5:32 a.m., on Tuesday, April 28, Ipswich Police responded to a residence on Linebrook Road where NEMLEC SWAT was attempting to serve an arrest warrant. The warrant’s subject, a 60-year-old man, was threatening to harm himself.
Police secured the surrounding area while responders engaged in de-escalation tactics to try to get the male to leave the home. After de-escalation attempts were unsuccessful, NEMLEC crews entered the home to prevent the male from further injuring himself.
Once in custody, the 60-year-old male was found to have self-inflicted wounds. Ipswich Fire provided medical support on scene, and Action Ambulance transported him to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The 60-year-old male has been connected with appropriate mental health services. An arraignment on the warrant charges will be held at a future time.
“I would like to commend the Ipswich officers and the NEMLEC SWAT Team for their professional response to this incident,” said Chief Nikas. “I am grateful that we were able to place this individual into custody and connect him with mental health services before the situation could escalate. This response demonstrates the commitment of Ipswich Police and NEMLEC to ensuring the wellbeing of every individual in the communities we serve, regardless of criminal history or any other factors.”
