NORTH READING — All calls to the North Reading Fire Department are now being routed through the North Shore Regional 911 Center (NSRECC) a regional dispatch hub staffed 24/7 by highly trained communications professionals.
The transition to all calls being routed through NSRECC was officially completed at noon on Wednesday, March 18. As a result of the transition the North Reading Fire Station will no longer be staffed at all times.
During times when on-duty firefighters are responding to calls or out of the station, the station will not be staffed and the front door will be locked. Anyone needing in-person assistance at the station will be able to use a call box in front of the stairs to speak with a dispatcher, who will then notify on-duty personnel to respond to the station as soon as possible.
NSRECC has a staff of 44 highly trained communications professionals who provide services 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The center serves over 70 communities in the greater North Shore area in some capacity.
Transitioning to a partnership with NSRECC has already enabled the North Reading Fire Department to add an additional firefighter per group to respond to incidents, bolstering staffing while also saving taxpayer dollars.
“This transition was a major project, and it is a positive step forward toward our goal of increasing firefighter staffing to improve safety for both firefighters and residents,” said Chief Don Stats. “The North Shore Regional 911 Center is a reliable, tested, and professional dispatch hub and we are excited to be working with them.”
The transition was first announced last year. For a more detailed description of the transition, click here.
