CONCORD — Families in the METCO program at Alcott Elementary School recently organized a special luncheon for staff in honor of Black History Month.

The event, originally scheduled for Feb. 23 but postponed due to the blizzard, was held on Friday, Feb. 27, and featured food from a local Black-owned catering company. The event provided an opportunity for staff to connect and celebrate the partnership between families and the school.

“The lunch was a wonderful way to recognize our staff and highlight the strong relationships we have with our families,” said Principal Naomi Krakow. “We are grateful to our METCO parents for their thoughtfulness and support.”

The METCO (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity) program, which brings Boston students into Concord schools, is funded by the state of Massachusetts to expand educational opportunities, increase diversity and reduce racial isolation by permitting students from Boston to attend public schools in other communities that have agreed to participate.

Parents organizing the luncheon said they wanted to celebrate Black History Month while expressing appreciation for the dedication of Alcott staff throughout the year.

“It was really special to see our families come together to thank our staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Laurie Hunter. “This gesture speaks to the meaningful connections our staff have built with students and families.”
