Georgetown Fire Department Extinguishes Kitchen Fire on Lakeridge Drive

GEORGETOWN — Chief Matt McKay reports that the Georgetown Fire Department responded to and extinguished a kitchen fire Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 4:18 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, the Georgetown Fire Department was dispatched to 2 Lakeridge Drive for a report of a kitchen fire.

Upon arrival, crews observed heavy smoke coming from the home. Firefighters entered the home and located remnants of a fire blanket in the kitchen sink that was used in an attempt to extinguish the fire, but was still burning.

Crews quickly extinguished the remaining fire and ventilated the home to remove the smoke.

At this time it appears the fire began while the homeowner was heating cooking oil on the stove. Upon recognizing the fire, the homeowner attempted to extinguish it using a fire blanket.

One resident was evaluated at the scene and transported to Lawrence General Hospital for further evaluation.

“When cooking with oil, residents should keep a metal lid or baking sheet nearby that is large enough to cover the pan,” says Chief McKay. “If the oil ignites, carefully slide the lid over the pan, turn off the burner and allow the pan to cool completely before removing the cover.”
