FARMINGTON – Mt. Blue Regional School District is proud to announce that the jazz band has earned a gold rating at the Maine Music Educators Association (MMEA) District 4 Jazz Festival.

The festival took place on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Students performed three selections for the competition: “Sing, Sing, Sing” by Louis Prima (arranged by Vince Gassi), “Misty” by by Errol Garner (arranged by Mike Lewis), and “Don’t Blame the Salsa” by Erik Sherburne.

The students’ performance scored a 96 out of 100 from both judges, earning them a gold rating.

To earn a gold rating, the ensemble must score a 95 or higher in its performance. The judges evaluate each performance based on tone, technique, interpretation and improvisation.

A gold rating reflects the students’ dedication and precision in the months leading up to the performance. The high score also advances the ensemble to the state-level competition, which will take place in March.

Several jazz band musicians were recognized for their solo performances. The following students received top ratings:

  • Quinn Hoeft (alto saxophone)
  • Kevin Montminy (trumpet)
  • Lucas DeMarco (tenor saxophone)
  • Kadin Dunn (piano)
  • Joshua Escobar (alto saxophone)
  • Elijah Mitchell (trombone)

“I’m super proud of all of the hard work this group of students has put in this year,” said Mt. Blue Jazz Band teacher Brendan Hickey The dedication they have shown to not only playing their instruments, but also working together as a team, has been a complete joy for me to watch.”
