MEDWAY — Medway Middle School recently welcomed the Berkshire Hills Music Academy group, “The Capabilities,” for a musical performance.

The performance was the second in a three-part speaker series the middle school is hosting. “The Capabilities” were invited to Medway Middle School after students expressed their desire to have assemblies where students could learn from others’ experiences and build community.

Administrators responded with enthusiasm, working to organize an engaging assembly that reflected the students’ request and aligned with Medway’s commitment to fostering a culture of belonging, respect and inclusion.

The result was one that celebrated the unique strengths and talents of every individual through music. Tim, Jeremy, Josh, Ethan, Marco and Michael make up “The Capabilities” and regularly perform at community and Berkshire Hills Music Academy events. They took their show on the road to Medway, where they provided an inspiring concert to the middle school.

Berkshire Hills Music Academy is a college-like musical program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The musicians model perseverance, inclusion and collaboration, demonstrating how diverse abilities contribute to collective success. The performance challenged student assumptions about ability and reinforced the message that every student has value and belongs within the school community.

Students and staff described the performance as the highlight of the school year, matching the band’s energy by singing and dancing in the audience. “The Capabilities” have already received requests to return to Medway Middle School next year.

In return, the band appreciated the warm welcome Medway provided, describing the experience as powerful and stating that the enthusiasm and genuine acceptance shown by the students made them feel like rock stars.

“I am proud of our students for how they advocate for the learning opportunities they want to see,” said Principal Amanda Luizzi. “The result was something very special, and it was encouraging to see our students connecting with ‘The Capabilities’ and their performance. Music often serves as a common ground between people, no matter the differences we may experience, and it certainly brought together Medway and Berkshire Hills students during that day.”

“Thank you to ‘The Capabilities’ and Berkshire Hills Music Academy for putting on a wonderful performance for our middle school,” said Superintendent Armand Pires. “The group brought an uplifting energy to Medway and gave us a day of fun music, as well as an important lesson in empathy, inclusion and respect. The auditorium was filled with excitement and joy, and I believe that ‘The Capabilities’ left a lasting impact on all of our students.”
