Concord Police and Fire to Participate in Townwide Emergency Shelter Training

CONCORD — Police Chief Thomas Mulcahy and Fire Chief Brian Whitney are pleased to share that the Concord Police and Fire Departments are participating in emergency shelter training alongside the Town of Concord, Department of Public Works and Public Health Department.

The emergency shelter training will take place on Friday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center, 1276 Main St.

Emergency shelters are utilized in towns during disasters that can leave residents unhoused or vulnerable. The Harvey Wheeler Community Center is available for residents during storms and disasters, and during emergencies, personnel will be on hand to assist.  The center can hold 243 residents.

The training will feature a simulated exercise with community volunteers acting as shelter-seekers during an unexpected storm. This will allow public safety, public health and other town departments to coordinate what to do in a disaster through registration, medical screenings and resource allocations.

The goal of the training is to practice procedures and protocols for when unpredictable disasters, including weather-related challenges, occur, to ensure that community members are protected.

During the training, residents will see an increased public safety and town employee presence. Residents are reminded that this is a training exercise and that there is no danger to the public.
