MATTAPOISETT — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson and Athletic Director Chris Carrig would like to offer thanks on behalf of Old Rochester Regional School District and MA Superintendency Union #55 to the community business partners whose support allowed ORR Athletics to make several important acquisitions, including a new portable scoreboard.

The more than $11,000 in equipment was purchased with funds generated from a group of corporate sponsors through the Advertising Partnership launched last year by the Old Rochester Regional High School Athletic Department. The Advertising Partnership offers local businesses and other corporate sponsors the opportunity to display their logos and information on 4-foot-by-8-foot windscreen signs located prominently on campus.

Those recent equipment purchases include the $5,869 portable scoreboard, a $3,715 indoor batting cage and protective mats that preserve the sidelines on the football field for $1,477.

While the funding for these purchases came from outside of the school district’s general operating budget, the expenditures were approved by the ORR School Committee, per district policy.

The following businesses, which all belong to the Advertising Partnership, contributed to these acquisitions:

  • A+ Repairs
  • Abington Bank
  • Burr Brothers Inc.
  • Coastal Orthodontics
  • Cranberry Self Storage
  • Hotte Construction
  • Hovan Property Group
  • Mattapoisett Food and Fuel
  • Orthodontic Specialists of SE Mass
  • Philadelphia Insurance
  • Pioneer Basement
  • Restoration Hardwood Flooring
  • River Junction
  • Robertsons GMC
  • SERVPRO of Dartmouth/New Bedford
  • South Coast Improvement Co.
  • South Shore Generator Sales
  • WC Excavation
  • Yard Boss Landscape Design

Making an immediate impact on outdoor sports, the new portable scoreboard addresses gaps in visibility and functionality, providing soccer, baseball, softball and field hockey players with a clear view of how much time is remaining, period of play, the score and other information. Previously, teams that were not playing beside the existing scoreboard on the school’s All Purpose Field had to resort to a small tabletop solution that has been prone to technical failure. The new rechargeable, battery-operated scoreboard is dependable, conveniently set on wheels, and reliably visible to all players, coaches, fans and referees.

The new indoor batting cage, with a protective floor covering, replaces the previous cage that aged and deteriorated over time. The new batting cage also features a vinyl backdrop that prevents balls from hitting walls and other equipment beyond the netting behind the batter.

The new sideline mats, purchased from Anthem Sports, protect the sidelines on the football field from wear and tear caused by large groups of players trampling the area on gameday.

Looking forward, the District aims to continue using revenue from the Advertising Partnership to fund additional upgrades to facilities, equipment and athletic apparel. The District also plans to offer additional corporate advertising opportunities in the future.

“We’ve now seen some of the contributions from the Advertising Partnership being put to good use, meeting some of the needs of the student-athletes that were not covered through our normal budget,” said Athletic Director Carrig. “We want to truly thank all of our community partners who have contributed, while making their support visible on campus through our windscreen signs program. We look forward to continuing this partnership as we all strive to provide the best opportunities for our student-athletes.”

“The contributions made by the community supporters who participate in the ORR Athletics Advertising Partnership are positively impacting so many of our students,” said Superintendent Nelson. “We want to thank them all for helping us continue providing the best athletic programs possible. We look forward to expanding this endeavor, increasing our community engagement and working together as a team to help improve ORR Athletic.”
