DUNSTABLE — Chief William Farrell reports that the Dunstable Fire Department and mutual aid partners battled a serious house fire Tuesday evening.
The Dunstable Fire and Police Departments responded at 4:15 p.m. for a report of a fire on the second floor of a home at 1095 Main St.
Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke showing from the second floor of a home. All occupants had evacuated.
After several minutes of aggressive attack and attempts to stop the spread of the flames, a second alarm of response was ordered, and firefighters began a defensive operation.
There are no fire hydrants in the area, so firefighters had to use tankers to establish enough of a water supply to support four hose lines that were used to attack the fire. Eventually the bulk of flames were knocked down and firefighters were able to reenter the home to finish extinguishing the flames.
The home suffered fire damage throughout and is believed to be a total loss.
Several residents were displaced, but they have family in the area and other places to stay temporarily.
Mutual aid was provided at the scene by fire crews from Nashua, Westford, Tyngsborough, Pepperell, Groton, Ayer, Devens, and Hollis, N.H. Firefighters from Shirley covered Dunstable stations.
The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by the Dunstable Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
