Canton Police Investigating Shooting

CANTON — Interim Police Chief Joseph Perkins reports that the Canton Police Department is investigating after a woman was shot near an apartment complex in town.

Police are actively searching for an armed suspect. The investigation indicates that the victim was targeted, and while there is no immediate threat to the community, authorities are urging residents of the Canton Woods Apartments and Lamplighter Village apartments and any homes and businesses from Tracywood Road south to the Stoughton town line to shelter in place at this hour.

Canton Police and Fire responded to the Lamplighter Village apartment complex, located at the intersection of Turnpike Street and Stagecoach Road, at 6:40 p.m. for a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, first responders found a woman in her 20s who had been shot while sitting in a vehicle. The victim was treated at the scene and transported to a Boston hospital with serious injuries. The Canton Fire Department blood transfusion unit deployed with transfusable blood and was riding along with the ambulance to Boston.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was sitting in the driver seat of a vehicle that was parked in the apartment complex waiting to meet someone when a man, possibly the person they were waiting for, approached with a dark handgun and opened fire into the vehicle. A second person, riding in the passenger seat, was not injured.

The suspect fled the scene and is described as Black skinned, late teens or early 20s, with a skinny build, about 5’5″ to 5’6″ tall, clean shaven wearing a black beanie hat.

Police do not believe this was a random act of violence, and significant mutual aid resources are in Canton conducting a search for the suspect.

Police resources from Stoughton and Randolph are on scene along with the Massachusetts State Police, the State Police Air Wing, area K-9 units, drone units and specialized units attached to the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council (METRO-LEC).

Turnpike Street, which becomes Washington Street in Stoughton and is otherwise known as Massachusetts Route 138 should be avoided at this time. There is a significant law enforcement presence in the area. Motorists should seek alternate routes.

The Town of Canton has issued a Reverse 911 call to residents in the immediate area asking that they shelter in place at this time.
