WOBURN — Superintendent Matthew Crowley and Principal Robert Nickerson are proud to announce the recent grand opening ceremony of a new playground on the campus of Malcolm White Elementary School on Monday, Nov. 10.
The ribbon cutting at the ceremony was conducted by a select group of Grade 5 student leaders, and attended by Mayor Mike Concannon and Superintendent Crowley, along with numerous other city and school department officials, parents, and community members.
“We are so proud of the students who were granted the opportunity to introduce this newly installed playground into our school community,” said Principal Nickerson. “The leadership they showed by taking on this task shows their belief in what this playground can do for the students here at Malcolm White.”
Planning continued throughout the month of September, with the Woburn Department of Public Works demolishing the previous playground, followed by the new playground’s construction throughout the month of October, and its grand opening ceremony on Nov. 10.
The necessary funds to coordinate the construction of the playground were organized over this past summer by Woburn Public Schools and the City of Woburn, and a group of stakeholders, including parent representatives, were brought in to select the playground equipment that would be installed, along with the color scheme.
The newly installed playground structure will provide social and emotional wellness benefits to all students, along with providing access to the local YMCA’s afterschool program. Students will also be able to build and enhance their sense of community and craft new friendships because of this investment by the town.
“We thank Woburn Public Schools Facilities Director Lenny Burnham and Mayor Concannon for providing the necessary funding and assistance for such a vital resource for our students to express their creativity and just have fun,” said Superintendent Crowley.
