North Middlesex Regional High School students have completed a collaborative oral history project that will preserve the memories of Townsend residents.
The project stemmed from a partnership between the district and the Townsend Historical Society (THS) Education Committee. The project was led by Rebecca Jackson, Social Studies Department Chair and advisor for the NMRHS Chapter of the National Social Studies Honor Society. Chris and Eileen Barnacoat, members of the THS Education Committee, helped to promote and develop this project with North Middlesex.
Five senior residents who grew up in Townsend were interviewed by Class of 2025 graduates Ryan Desjardins, Georgia Harkins, Mia Malcolm, Johanna Marston, and Olivia Rowley, and Class of 2026 student Sophia Pofcher.
Rowley, Pofcher, and Class of 2025 members Jack Brady, Jude Babineau, and Rebekah Sylvester transcribed the interviews.
The project was produced, directed, and filmed by Qenan Francois, a Class of 2025 graduate who now serves on the School Committee.
The students’ efforts will be part of a broader project to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence in 2026. Plans are in the works to create a time capsule of life in Townsend in 2025-26, to be opened in 2076. Interviews and transcriptions will be included in the time capsule.
A sampling of the interviews may be found on the THS website. They will also be shown during events at the Townsend Historical Society, 72 Main St.
The North Middlesex Regional School District expresses its gratitude to seniors John Barrett, Sam Briguglio, Victoria Brunelle, Alan Ruuska, and Carol Wright for providing students with an immersive learning experience.
