Arthur Newhook Jr. Sworn in as New Berkley Police Chief

BERKLEY — The Berkley Police Department is pleased to announce that Arthur Newhook Jr. has officially begun in his new role as Chief.

Chief Newhook, a 33-year veteran of the department, was sworn in during a ceremony in the Berkley Middle School library on Monday, Aug. 11.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be chosen to serve as the Chief of the Berkley Police Department,” said Chief Newhook. “I began my career with this department and have worked my way through the ranks over the last 30-plus years. I could not be more proud to work alongside this dedicated team of men and women who care deeply about this community.”

Chief Newhook began his career as a reserve police officer in Berkley in March 1992. He became a patrolman with the department in November 1988. He was promoted to sergeant in November 2004, served as detective sergeant from 2021 to 2023, and was promoted to deputy chief in December 2023.

He was named the Interim Police Chief in July following the retirement of Chief Christopher Baker.

Chief Newhook holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in criminal justice administration from Western New England University. He received the FBI-LEEDA Triliogy  Award in November 2022 and completed the Leaders Helping Leaders Network Significant Leader Series in June.
