East Bridgewater Firefighters Respond to Child’s Near-Drowning on July Fourth; Easton Firefighters on the Scene Revive Victim

EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief John E. Dzialo is proud to recognize East Bridgewater Fire Department personnel who provided critical care to an injured juvenile last week.

“I’d like to recognize a few of our members for their actions over the holiday weekend,” said Chief Dzialo. “As we all know, there are a few calls that we train for but never want to respond to, and on July Fourth, our members received one of those calls.”

On Friday, July 4, around 4 p.m., East Bridgewater Fire Department received a call from a home on Fieldcrest Drive reporting the possible drowning of a child with CPR in progress.

Paramedics from the Easton Fire Department — firefighters Chris Mills, Shawn Goyette, Jenn Parker and Jack Mills — who happened to be on the scene performed CPR and the patient was revived. When East Bridgewater fire crews arrived on the scene shortly after, the 5-year-old patient was carried to an ambulance and further care was initiated.

As the patient was prepared for transport, he was conscious, displayed good vital signs and was transported to the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth for evaluation. The child was transferred to Boston Children’s Hospital for evaluation overnight and discharged the following day.

“This was the best outcome that all involved could have asked for,” said Chief Dzialo. “Please join me in recognizing the efforts of our members, paramedic Lt. Matthew Leighton, and firefighters Gregory Doucette, John Merlini and Adam Flaherty, as well as those from the Easton Fire Department, who all worked together seamlessly on one of the toughest calls we can receive. I am proud to work alongside all of you, and these are the calls that you deserve to be recognized for. Great job all around!”
